Pre-feasibility study of Multi Modal Transportation Hub at BIAL
A large number of residential layouts and business parks are set to make the BIAL region a busy hub of activities. To service the mobility needs of this region requires an integration of multiple government and private development agency plans.
The need for such a Multi Modal Transportation Hub (MMTH) prompted the Infrastructure Development Department (IDD), to commission BCCF to conduct a pre-feasibility study.
The scope of the work:
1. To identify the catchment area serviced by the multi modal mobility hub
2. Estimate the size of the hub.
Catchment Area:
The passengers, airport employees and employees of the proposed centers Aerocity, Devanahalli Business Park, IT and Hardware park employment are within 5-6 KM from the identified hub location.
Proposed modes – High speed rail, Metro Rail and perhaps Mono Rail and BRT in addition to BMTC, KSRTC and the Railways.

Projections:
| ( 2009) | 2011 | 2031 | |
|
Air-Passengers (annual) |
8.9 lakhs | 10 Lakhs | 50 Lakhs |
| Employment | 0.1Lakhs | 0.15 Lakhs | 10 Lakhs |
| Resident population | ND | ND | ND |
- HSRL study forecasts aprox. 70,000 inbound passengers and employees (in 2031)
- Aero City, DBP, ITP, HWP, Aerospace
- BIAAPA Plan envisions 10 Lakh population, however clear data on airport township not available. This number is not considered.
Proposed location and connectivity
The above diagram shows the tentative location for the mobility hub identified by Infrastructure Development Dept (GoK)
The advantage of the location is its proximity to the NH-7 and the airport trumpet interchange.
But BCCF highlighted two concern areas:
1. Since the hub is located adjacent to the National Highway - 7 there is an issue with dedicated entry and exit. In order to maintain seamless entry and exit from the hub (without disturbing NH-7 traffic), capital investment is required for building an additional trumpet interchange.
2. To serve the catchment area it is necessary to have good connectivity, which involves a large capital investment. Without this the hub can serve only BIAL, Aerocity and DBP.
Size and Component of Hub
| Component |
Features | Estimated Land Area (acres) |
| Railway halt-station | Platform on both sides | 2.0 |
| Bus-Station | Shared space - BMTC, KSRTC | 2.0 |
| Bus idle parking | Shared space - BMTC, KSRTC | 2.0 |
| Bus depot | One each for BMTC & KSRTC | 6.0 |
| Parking | Multi-level, includes taxi and auto stand | 1.0 |
| Service areas/Future contingencies | Facilities for users, small retail | 1.0 |
| Total | 14.0 |
Other recommendations:
Given the large demands of the region it is proposed that the mass transit system planned for the area be integrated to the MMTH.
Also it would be essential for the hub to have has access to the proposed expressway.
